In a dystopian future, insurance fraud investigator William Gold (Tim Robbins) arrives in Shanghai to investigate a forgery ring for "papelles", futuristic passports that record people's identities and genetics. After a passionate affair with Maria Gonzalez (Samantha Morton), the woman in charge of the forgeries, Gold returns home, having named a coworker as the culprit, but soon discovers that he has been deceived by his own memories. As Maria is taken away to have her memory erased, William realizes that she is a biological clone of his mother and decides not to leave her. The two then travel together in the UAE, escaping the authorities who are tracking them through their implanted Bio-Passports, and eventually William awakens in Seattle with no memory of Maria or their time together.
