In a desolate and isolated small town in Hungary during a winter season in recent times, a young newspaper-delivery man, János Valuska, conducts a performance about the total eclipse of the sun, which disturbs the animals. A traveling circus arrives with a giant stuffed whale and its star performer, "The Prince", who is never seen, bringing ominous signs to the rural population. As the town's residents await this ultimate attraction, they are met with dread, especially for János, who loses his job as the local entertainment source. The circus master's loss of control over The Prince leads to chaos and violence, ultimately resulting in a devastating riot that changes the lives of János and those around him forever.
