Charismatic roving peddler Hank Martin falls in love with schoolteacher Verity Wade and soon marries her. On their wedding day, he rents a ramshackle home from his upper-class lawyer friend Jules Bolduc, where he gathers friends to fix it up. As Hank's popularity grows, so does the darkness beneath his charming facade, threatening the very people who trusted him.
