The film "Profound Desires of the Gods" (1968) tells the story of a Tokyo engineer, Kariya (Kazuo Kitamura), who is sent to a remote Pacific island to drill a well for a sugar mill. On the island, he interacts with the Futori clan, including Nekichi Futori (Rentarō Mikuni), his own brother conceived through incestuous relations with their father. As Kariya becomes entangled in the family's dark secrets and desires, he finds himself complicit in both conflict and strange ways, leading to a chronicle of life on the island that explores themes of industrialization, isolation, and the exploitation of rural communities.
