During the War of 1812, American forces under General Andrew Jackson (Charlton Heston) seek the aid of pirate Jean Lafitte (Yul Brynner), who controls a strategically important island near New Orleans. The governor hates Lafitte for selling merchandise without taxes, but the citizens love him for it. As the British fleet approaches with 60 ships and 16,000 men, Lafitte is drawn between fighting for America or joining the winning side.
