Porter Stoddard (Warren Beatty), a well-known New York architect, navigates multiple twists and turns in his personal life, including an affair with cellist Alex and a romantic entanglement with Eugenie Claybourne, a spoiled heiress. As Porter's friends Mona Morris (Goldie Hawn) and her husband Griffin (Garry Shandling) face their own marital problems, the group embarks on a series of misadventures, including a trip to Mississippi and a Halloween party in Sun Valley. Along the way, Porter must confront his own relationships and priorities with his wife Ellie (Diane Keaton).
