A wealthy and influential attorney in Cherbourg is brought in for questioning by Inspector Antoine Gallien on New Year's Eve, suspected of being involved in two horrendous crimes. Lino Ventura plays Inspector Gallien, while Michel Serrault stars as Jérôme Martinaud, the prime suspect, opposite Romy Schneider as his wife Chantal. As the investigation unfolds, Martinaud's alibi is chipped away at, revealing a complex web of relationships and motives that lead to a shocking confession.
