Inside the Kit Kat Club of 1931 Berlin, starry-eyed singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) and an impish emcee sound the clarion call to decadent fun, while outside a certain political party grows into a brutal force. Sally tries to seduce Brian Roberts (Michael York), a reserved academic and writer, but he tells her that on three previous occasions he has tried to have sexual relationships with women, all of which failed. They become friends, and Brian witnesses Sally's bohemian life in the last days of the Weimar Republic, including her connections to Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem), a rich, married playboy and baron. The film explores the rise of Fascism in Europe through its changing actions and attitudes towards the rising Nazism in the Weimar Republic.
