The crew of an American tugboat boards an abandoned Russian research vessel and quickly sets about claiming salvage rights. However, they soon discover that something on board is not human, and it potentially spells doom for all, as Jamie Lee Curtis's character Kelly Foster helps a fellow crewman Steve Baker rescue an injured Hiko, while Woods comes out unscathed, but their tranquility is short-lived. The ship's anchor then drops on its own, sinking Sea Star with deckhand Hiko and first mate J.W. Woods Jr. on board, and the crew soon finds themselves being attacked by robots in an automated workshop producing more androids. As Foster treats Hiko in the sick bay, Chief Science Officer Nadia Vinogradova explains that the sentient electrical energy beamed from space seeks to turn humanity into cyborg slaves, recognizing her husband, Captain Robert Everton, as the "dominant lifeform."
