White Zombie

In this early B-movie horror classic, a wealthy plantation owner living in Haiti convinces a sorcerer to lure his fiancée away from her betrothed, only to betray their agreement and keep her for himself as a zombie. Filmed on the Universal Studios lot, White Zombie (1932) tells the story of a young woman's transformation into a zombie by a voodoo master, featuring Bela Lugosi in one of his early roles. With its blend of action, horror, and melodrama, this independently produced film was a commercial success despite receiving negative reviews upon its premiere in New York.
