In the Time of the Butterflies

Three sisters, Minerva, Patria, Dedé, and María Teresa "Maté", become activists during the Dominican Republic's Trujillo regime when members of their family are killed by the government's troops. Based on Julia Álvarez's book, this film tells a fictionalized account of the lives of the Mirabal sisters, who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo and were assassinated in 1960. Minerva, played by Salma Hayek, captures the attention of Trujillo, but her response to his advances sparks her own revolutionary activities, drawing her into a world of danger and resistance.
