Mild-mannered Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a 27-year-old public radio journalist in Seattle, is diagnosed with schwannoma neurofibrosarcoma, a cancerous tumor in his spine, and must undergo chemotherapy. After experiencing severe pains, Adam meets Mitch and Alan, two older cancer patients undergoing chemo, and they become friends. His best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) attempts to keep up his morale while also revealing the infidelity of his girlfriend Rachael (Anna Kendrick). Through a series of hilarious and heartfelt moments, Adam's journey is intertwined with that of his therapist Katherine McKay (Anna Kendrick), who helps him understand his mother's situation and eventually becomes a source of comfort in his life.
