In 1861, prior to the American Civil War, Union Lt. Jed Sayre (Audie Murphy) tries to prove local Navajo Indians were innocent of killing a prospector, while facing anti-Indian attitudes from his superior officer Capt. Lee Whitlock (Robert Sterling). He discovers Confederate sympathizers are planning to incite a Navajo war in the New Mexico Territory for their benefit, highlighting north-south tensions among the soldiers.
