The film "Anchoress" (1993) is a drama about a 14th-century peasant who becomes transfixed by a statue of the Virgin Mary and petitions to be walled into a cell attached to the church as a religious hermit. Natalie Morse plays Christine Carpenter, the young girl at the center of the story, whose mystical visions of the Virgin Mary lead to a complex web of relationships with local authorities. The film is shot in black-and-white and visually evokes the style of Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer.
