A Woman Under the Influence

Mabel Longhetti, played by Gena Rowlands, is a Los Angeles housewife and mother whose unusual behavior leads to conflict with her husband Nick (Peter Falk) and family. She sends their three young children to spend the night with her mother so she and Nick can have a date night, but Nick's construction work forces him to cancel at the last minute. Alone and drunk, Mabel goes to a bar and is brutally raped by a stranger named Garson Cross, whom she mistakes for her husband Nick. Afterward, Nick becomes increasingly concerned about Mabel's mental health, eventually having her involuntarily committed to an institution.
