Adrien Brody stars as Steven Schoichet, an ex-office worker who becomes a ventriloquist after buying a dummy named Woody, hoping it will help him gain confidence and improve his social skills. As he pursues his new career, he meets Lorena Fanchetti, an unemployment counselor who develops feelings for him. Meanwhile, Fangora "Fanny" Gurkel, Steven's eccentric friend, tries to convince him that success is just around the corner, while Heidi Schoichet, Steven's abrasive sister, struggles with her own aspirations and family dynamics.
