In AD 1000, a young Sámi named Aigin witnesses his family's massacre by raiding Chudes in northern Scandinavia and flees to a community of other Sámis. Afraid of the murderers, they decide to flee to the coast with him as their guide. Unbeknownst to them, he leads them into a trap set by the Chudes, who torture his mentor, Raste. After being wounded and betrayed, Aigin concocts a plan to trick the Chudes, leading them off a treacherous cliff into an avalanche that kills most of their number.
