Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream That One Calls Human Life

The film "Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream That One Calls Human Life" (1995) is a drama directed by the Brothers Quay in their feature debut. Based on Robert Walser's novel Jakob von Gunten, the film stars Mark Rylance as Jakob, who enters a servant school run by siblings Johannes and Lisa Benjamenta. The teachers teach the students that they are unimportant, leading to Jakob's challenges against the Benjamentas, particularly his growing attraction to Lisa (Alice Krige). As winter sets in, Lisa becomes catatonic, and the institute closes, leaving Herr Benjamenta to travel with Jakob in a surreal scene.
