Poor Things

In a retrofuturist alternative late-Victorian London, 1882, Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) is a young woman whose body is reanimated by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). As weeks pass, Bella's vocabulary improves and she exhibits childlike wonder at the world, eventually running off with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn to Lisbon, where they have near-constant intercourse due to her limited understanding of anything beyond physical pleasure. Along the way, she witnesses the suffering of the poor, becomes terminally ill, and ultimately reconciles with Dr. Godwin before discovering her past life and confronting her abusive former lover Alfie Blessington, leading to a dramatic confrontation and a surprising resolution.
