The World

In the hauntingly beautiful "The World," director Jia Zhangke explores the lives of young rural migrants living and working at Beijing World Park, a bizarre cross-pollination of Las Vegas and Epcot Center where visitors can interact with famous international monuments without ever leaving the city's suburbs. Set in early 21st-century China, during a time of accelerated integration into globalization, the film follows performers and security guards as they navigate the spectacle of modernization and global consumer culture, where personal dreams clash with structural realities.
