In 1759, Langdon Towne (Robert Young) returns home to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, after his expulsion from Harvard University and is met with love by his family, particularly Elizabeth Browne (Ruth Hussey), whom he also reunites with later in the film. After a series of events that lead him to join Major Robert Rogers' (Spencer Tracy) elite force, Rogers' Rangers, Langdon becomes embroiled in a famous raid on the Abenaki village of St. Francis and accompanies Rogers on subsequent marches through swampland as they try to survive against hostile French and Indian forces.
