"Calcutta 71" is a haunting meditation on poverty, natural disaster, and political strife in India, weaving together four disjunct stories that span different walks of life. From the struggles of a middle-class family to survive the monsoons, to the moral compromise of a single mother forced to pawn her daughters for survival during famine, the film exposes the darker side of Indian society. Meanwhile, a young boy's desperate act of defiance against an abusive bourgeoisie man becomes a catalyst for revolution, while the empty words of a hypocrite businessman ring hollow amidst the squalor of a corporate concert party.
