In 1962, Major Hank Marshall and his wife Carly face marital difficulties due to the pressures of Hank's military career and Carly's mental health issues. Hank is a nuclear engineer who favors underground nuclear testing, an initiative code-named "Blue Sky", rather than above-ground, open-air detonations. Carly is highly volatile, sometimes supercharged with anger or exuberance. Their relationship becomes increasingly strained as Hank's concerns about the test are dismissed by his superiors and Carly's erratic behavior causes tension among their family.
