The Gate of Youth

The Gate of Youth tells the story of Shinsuke and his stepmother, from his infancy to his mid-teens, set against the backdrop of poverty in a coal mining community dominated by the Chikuo mines. Coal worker and miner Ken Tanaka plays a significant role as one of the older men who tries to help Shinsuke cope with the loss of his father, who bravely dies while rescuing trapped Korean miners. The film explores themes of loss and hardship, set against the harsh realities of life in the mines.
