The film tells the story of Ester, a young Sámi woman who moves to Alta in Northern Norway in 1979 to teach at an elementary school. Hiding her Sámi heritage and ashamed of her roots, she joins her cousin Mihkkal at a protest camp against the construction of a dam, where people are demonstrating against brutal racism and discrimination against their people. Ester witnesses the social exclusion faced by her student Ailu and begins to make a stand, joining the hunger strike in Oslo with the Sámi Action Group, alongside characters like Mihkkal and Áhkku, who sings an important yoik for Ester's deceased father.
