In Paris, in February 1817, three years after the fall of the Empire, Colonel Chabert (Gérard Depardieu), a shabbily dressed man claiming to be believed dead at the Battle of Eylau, visits lawyer Maître Derville (Fabrice Luchini) with tales of his survival. He seeks recognition and rights but finds himself caught in a web of deceit when his former wife, Countess Ferraud (Fanny Ardant), refuses to acknowledge him, having married and had children. As Chabert navigates this challenging situation, he abandons his claim, finishing his life penniless and in an asylum, reminiscing on his last battle.
