In 1942, U.S. Army Col. Joseph Madden (John Wayne) leads local fighters in a guerrilla campaign against the Japanese in the Philippines. After the fall of the Philippines to the Japanese, Madden's group discovers that the Japanese have been using a Filipino school teacher, Bertha Barnes, and her students to transmit valuable information to the guerrillas. Madden engineers the rescue of Captain Andrés Bonifacio, the fictional grandson of the national hero, from the Bataan Death March and his group attacks Japanese outposts and supply depots.
