The Mission

In the 18th-century South American wilderness, a Spanish Jesuit priest named Father Gabriel enters the eastern Paraguayan jungle to convert the Guaraní to Christianity. His mission is initially met with violence and hostility, but ultimately wins over the hearts of the native people through his oboe playing. When Spain sells the colony to Portugal, they are forced to defend their mission against the Portuguese aggressors, leading to a violent confrontation that tests Father Gabriel's faith and the loyalty of a former slave hunter, Captain Rodrigo Mendoza, who has converted to Christianity. The film is a powerful and poignant portrayal of colonialism, religious conversion, and the clash of cultures, set against the backdrop of one of the most pivotal moments in South American history.
