Major Andrea Rossi-Colombotti (Marcello Mastroianni), an army officer, can only seduce women in life-threatening situations. Frustrated with his condition, he visits a psychiatrist, who recommends seeking spiritual qualities in women rather than focusing on their physical attributes. Andrea's adventures include a romance with Gigliola, a beautiful woman he charms and proposes to, but ultimately kisses a lion tamer at a circus, ending their romance.
