After his mother overdoses, 18-year-old Joshua "J" Cody is taken in by his extended family after being raised by his estranged grandmother, Janine "Smurf" Cody, a matriarch of a Melbourne crime family that uses her home as a base. Smurf's oldest son, Andrew "Pope" Cody, is in hiding with the volatile middle brother, Craig, and youngest brother, Darren, who follows their lead. J is quickly exposed to the criminal underworld and must navigate his relationships with the gang members, including Baz, played by Joel Edgerton, and Detective Senior Sergeant Nathan Leckie, played by Guy Pearce, as he tries to escape his fate and find a way out of the family's violent world.
