Five young Italian men, including Moraldo Rubini (Franco Interlenghi), Alberto (Alberto Sordi), Fausto Moretti (Franco Fabrizi), Leopoldo Vannucci (Leopoldo Trieste), and Riccardo (Riccardo Fellini), live aimlessly in a small Italian village, drifting through life with no direction or purpose. They spend their days shuffling from one empty café to another, performing childish pranks and taunting road workers. The group's lives are marked by Fausto's womanizing, Riccardo's unrealistic ambitions, Alberto's unhappiness over his sister's secret relationship, and Leopoldo's desire to escape the provincial monotony of their dead-end town. As they try to find comfort and meaning in their lives, they join forces to rescue Fausto's pregnant wife and child from an unhappy marriage.
