Ciao! Manhattan is a semi-biographical tale of 1960s counterculture icon Edie Sedgwick, weaving fiction and documentary footage into a poignant portrait of her life as Susan Superstar, a New York celebrity on a downward spiral of excess and self-destruction. The film captures the striking similarities between Sedgwick's life story and that of her fictional alter-ego through actual audio recordings of Sedgwick's account of her time in Andy Warhol's Factory, making the candid depiction of celebrity excess and the fragility of fame especially haunting. Completed shortly after Sedgwick's death in 1971, the film has since been regarded as a cult classic and a poignant record of Sedgwick's life and New York's 1960s underground scene.
