Esther Blodgett (Janet Gaynor) is a young aspiring actress who catches the eye of her idol Norman Maine (Fredric March), a fading movie star struggling with chronic alcoholism. Esther becomes his wife and launches his career once more as newly minted Vicki Lester, but his addiction ultimately proves to be his undoing.
