Stevie O'Malley (Spencer Tracy), a former war correspondent, travels to a small town to write a flattering biography of national hero Robert V. Forrest, whose death in a car accident has sent the country into mourning. As Stevie befriends Forrest's widow, Christine, played by Katharine Hepburn, she begins to open up about her husband's mysterious past and the dark secrets he kept hidden.
