A grounded American fighter pilot is switched to espionage on a special job in which he must kill a small-time Paris lawyer suspected of double-crossing France by selling out radio operators to the Nazis. After encountering the man, however, the pilot begins to doubt his mission and ultimately kills him under unclear circumstances. The film explores themes of war's impact on individual conscience and the moral complexities of espionage.
