In 1956, waitress Shirley Muldowney marries auto mechanic Jack Muldowney over her father's objections, and she becomes a housewife while he races his hot rod on deserted stretches of road at night. One chance encounter with professional driver "Big Daddy" Don Garlits inspires her to pursue sponsorship for her own drag racing career, despite the skepticism of those around her.
