He made his acting debut as the pirate Abduwali Muse in Captain Phillips (2013), earning a British Academy Film Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Notable subsequent roles include Eye in the Sky and Blade Runner 2049, as well as recurring appearances on Castle Rock and The Curse.
