Biography

Soumitra Chatterjee was a renowned Indian actor and poet, known for his collaborations with Oscar-winning film director Satyajit Ray in fourteen films, including Apur Sansar (1959) and Charulata (1964). He won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and France's highest award for artists, the Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Chatterjee was also awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2004, recognizing his contributions to Indian cinema.
