The Goddess

In rural Bengal in 19th-century India, Devi follows Kalikinkar Roy (Chhabi Biswas), a devoted Hindu who believes his daughter-in-law Doyamoyee (Sharmila Tagore) is the human incarnation of Goddess Kali. After a dream interpreting their merged eyes as a divine revelation, Kalikinkar begins worshipping Doyamoyee, much to the skepticism of her husband Umaprasad (Soumitra Chatterjee). As word spreads about the "miracle" and Doyamoyee's popularity grows, she becomes increasingly isolated, and her true nature is tested by the demands of her devoted but misguided followers.
