Biography

Barry Fitzgerald was born William Joseph Shields in Dublin, Ireland in 1888 and joined Dublin's Abbey Players in the 1920s, eventually coaxed to the U.S. by John Ford to appear in his film adaptation of The Plough and the Stars. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Going My Way (1944) and was nominated for Best Actor for the same role, a first for the award.
