John Kani

Biography

Bonisile John Kani is a South African actor, director, and playwright born in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, in 1943. He co-wrote the acclaimed anti-apartheid play Sizwe Banzi Is Dead with Athol Fugard and Winston Ntshona, which won the Tony Award in 1975. Kani's work has been widely performed globally, including a post-apartheid South Africa, where he dealt with personal trauma after being beaten by police on his way back home.
