In 19th-century Victorian England, a £20,000 fortune hangs precariously in the balance between two elderly brothers, Masterman and Joseph Finsbury. The last survivor of a tontine, where £1,000 was invested for each child (£20,000 in total), is entitled to the entire fund, setting off a hilarious and chaotic game of deception, misdirection, and murder. As the two brothers vie for control of the fortune, their attempts at outsmarting each other lead to a series of absurd and deadly misunderstandings.
