Dancer in the Dark

In 1964, Selma Jezková, a Czech immigrant and factory worker played by Björk, struggles to make ends meet for herself and her son Gene Ježek, who shares the same degenerative eye condition as his mother. With the help of her friend Kathy, Selma copes with her situation through daydreams and musical numbers, which she imagines in her surroundings. When life gets too difficult, Selma turns to desperation, ultimately leading to a tragic confrontation with the man she thought could save her son's vision, Bill Houston, played by David Morse. The film is a powerful exploration of motherhood, love, and the American justice system, set against a backdrop of musical theatre and everyday life in small-town America.
