The Oregon Trail

In 1846, Fred MacMurray's character Neal Harris joins a wagon train bound for the Oregon Territory as a reporter from the New York Herald to investigate rumors of President Polk sending soldiers disguised as settlers. Along the trail, he befriends eccentric Zachariah Garrison and becomes entangled in a love triangle with Prudence Cooper. The film follows their journey through various hardships, including a climactic battle against an Arapaho attack, which ultimately leads Harris to resign his job and continue on to Oregon with Garrison's apple trees.
