Ikiru

Kanji Watanabe (Takashi Shimura), a middle-aged civil service lifer, is told he has terminal stomach cancer and begins to re-evaluate his life. As he struggles to come to terms with his impending death, he explores the pleasures of Tokyo's nightlife and finds comfort in the enthusiasm and joy of a young female subordinate, Toyo. Eventually, Watanabe decides to use his remaining time to make a meaningful impact on his job, pushing for the construction of a playground project that had been stuck in bureaucratic limbo. Through his journey, Watanabe ultimately finds a sense of purpose and meaning, as his former co-workers gather at his wake and reflect on the dramatic change in his behavior.
