In czarist Russia, Boris Grushenko (Woody Allen), a neurotic and pacifist soldier, is forced to enlist in the Russian army along with his cousin Sonja (Diane Keaton). The two engage in mock-serious philosophical debates, including discussions of love and sex. After Napoleon's invasion, Boris inadvertently becomes a war hero when he falls asleep inside a cannon, killing French officers. He then marries Sonja, and together they concoct a plan to assassinate Napoleon at his headquarters in Moscow, debating the matter with philosophical doublespeak before ultimately deciding to carry out the deed.
