Dr. Kyojio Niide (Toshirō Mifune), a rough-tempered yet charitable town doctor and martial artist, takes on a young and arrogant intern named Dr. Noboru Yasumoto (Yūzō Kayama) at his rural clinic in 19th-century Japan. Through various patients, including a rescued prostitute named Otoyo (Terumi Niki), Niide teaches Yasumoto the true meaning of compassion and healing, helping him to overcome his vanity and selfishness.
