In 1947, Sheila Bennet (Evelyn Keyes) and her husband Matt Krane (Charles Korvin) smuggle diamonds into New York City, unknowingly starting a smallpox outbreak. As the disease spreads, Sheila, feeling sick, inadvertently infects a little girl, and the couple's lives spiral out of control. Meanwhile, government officials and police are hot on the trail of both the diamond smugglers and the smallpox carrier, leading to a desperate search for the truth.
