L'Herbier's adaptation of Émile Zola's novel about the corrupting power of money, set in the high-stakes world of Parisian banking and the stock market in the 1920s, follows the rival bankers Saccard and Gunderman as they engage in a ruthless game of manipulation and deception. Pierre Alcover stars as the charismatic but duplicitous banker Saccard, whose schemes are aided by the scheming Baroness Sandorf, played by Brigitte Helm. Henry Victor plays the idealistic aviator Jacques Hamelin, whose failing business venture becomes a liability for Saccard.
