In 17th century France, a skilled swordsman named Lagardère (Daniel Auteuil) challenges the Duke of Nevers (Vincent Perez) to a duel, learning his deadly secret maneuver. Nevers' evil cousin Gonzague (Fabrice Luchini) tries to kill him and his infant daughter, Aurore (Marie Gillain), before she can be protected by Lagardère. After Nevers' death, Lagardère vows to avenge him and raises Aurore in disguise as a hunchback, teaching her how to fight. Years later, Lagardère reveals Aurore's true identity and together they conspire to exact revenge on Gonzague, leading to a dramatic sword fight and a triumphant conclusion.
